Where to Visit on Your Next Boating Adventure in Sarasota, FL

This summer, head out for a boating adventure in Sarasota, Florida. From waterfront dining, to water-sports, there are so many opportunities for fun in the sun on the water here. Whether you’re just visiting, or a new boat owner, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite boating adventures here in Southwest Florida.

Before setting sail, plan your day with the following activities.

  1. Sarasota Sandbars
    • No boating day is complete in Sarasota without visiting one of the local sandbars. Currents and waves during low tide create shallow beaches in the waterways, and on any given day, boaters moar up to socialize, boat hop and enjoy the sun. Be sure to visit Sharker’s Island at the east end of Big Pass for the full experience. On the weekends, you’ll catch locals pulling up their boats, hopping out with beach chairs, and enjoying some true R & R. Always practice caution when boating around a sandbar as sometimes visitors swim in the nearby waters.
  2. Explore the Luxury Homes
    • Another favorite activity on the water is a self-led tour of the luxury waterfront homes. Jaws drop as you pass along the bay, ogling at stunning mansions and perfectly manicured properties. You’ll spot everything from extravagant artwork and sculptures, to low key tiki bars being enjoyed by their owners. Head down any of the canals for a quiet jaunt through some of Sarasota’s most iconic neighborhoods and for a look at some of the area’s most fabulous waterfront homes.
  3. Go Fishing
    • Located in Sarasota Bay, The Middle Grounds is an expansive spot that covers the north and east of the channel to New Pass. Here, a mix of seagrass beds and flats are populated by enviable game fish like pompano, redfish, snook and cobia. Moor your boat here and throw out a line for a chance to win some of the area’s most acclaimed fish. Need bait? Don’t forget to stop by New Pass Grill & Bait Shop at the base of the John Ringling Causeway to pick up some live bait and fishing supplies.
  4. Waterfront Dining
    • All of those sunny adventures will have you working up an appetite. Have no fear, many waterfront restaurants in Sarasota allow you to pull up your boat, park and hop off! Some of my favorite waterfront spots include Old Salty Dog, Pop’s and Casey Key Fish House. After a long day on the water, you can pull up to any of these spots for a delicious meal and refreshments.
